Before I Die What is important to you 2011-present
It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget what really matters to you. When I lost someone I loved very much, I thought about death a lot. This helped clarify my life, the people I want to be with, and the things I want to do, but I struggled to maintain perspective. I wanted to know what was important to the people around me and I wanted a daily reminder. So with help from old and new friends, I painted the side of an abandoned house in my neighborhood in New Orleans with chalkboard paint and stenciled it with a grid of the sentence “Before I die I want to _______.” Anyone walking by could pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space.
It was all an experiment and I didn’t know what to expect. By the next day the wall was entirely filled out and it kept growing: Before I die I want to… sing for millions, hold her one more time, eat a salad with an alien, see my daughter graduate, abandon all insecurities, plant a tree, straddle the International Date Line, get clean, live off the grid, build a school, be someone’s cavalry, be completely myself… People’s responses made me laugh out loud and tear up. They consoled during my own tough times. It’s about knowing you’re not alone. It’s about understanding our neighbors in new and enlightening ways. It’s about making space for reflection and contemplation and remembering what matters most to us as we grow and change.
After receiving many requests, my Civic Center colleagues and I created a Before I Die toolkit and the project site beforeidie.cc to help people make a wall with their community. You can also download all files for free to remix or create your own stencils. Thanks to passionate people, over 75 Before I Die walls have now been created in over 10 languages and in over 25 countries, including Kazakhstan, Portugal, Japan, Denmark, Australia, Argentina, and South Africa. Each wall is unique and reflects the people of that community. Each wall is a tribute to living an examined life. The project shows you don’t need a big budget to make a big impact. It also questions how we use our time and our public spaces. In our age of increasing distractions it’s more important than ever to find ways to maintain perspective and remember that life is brief and tender. Thinking about death clarifies your life. And with more ways to share our hopes, fears, and stories in public space, the people around us can not only help us make better places, they can help us become our best selves.
Visit the project website beforeidie.cc for more walls, tools, and resources. Follow the Before I Die project on Twitter and Facebook to stay updated on the latest walls and responses. Watch my TED talk about the project. Have you created a Before I Die wall or remix? Please send your photos and stories to hello@beforeidie.cc!

The first stencil
Within 24 hours of stenciling the wall.
Kristina Kassem Once the wall was filled to the max or looking janky, we washed it down and started over again.
Update Sept 22, 2011: After seven months, the first wall comes to a happy end: the house will be turned into a home again thanks to new owners. We painted over the wall and stenciled one last thing – something Wendell Pierce said a few months ago that has stayed with Candy since: “Our thoughts are to the individual as our art is to the community.” It was ready to go but from the ashes come more.
Update Sept 22, 2011: After receiving many requests, we created a Before I Die toolkit to help people make a wall with their community! It includes a one-column stencil made of thick mylar so it’s easy to hang rigid against a wall. It also includes a title stencil, a guide, metal chalk holders, gloves, and chalk. All files are also available for free download if you’d like to create your own stencils.

“Death can inspire life. Especially in New Orleans, on the corner of Marigny and Burgundy, where the Before I Die project has used the specter of urban decay and death to create art and inspire. Using a boarded up house as a canvas, artist Candy Chang transformed a haunting reminder of blight and divestment into a powerful affirmation of human life and imagination.” – Life and Times

Man we would have the biggest community fish fry in history if I had caught that. Wonder if it's safe to eat Albino fish?
From the extremely rare and humungous file comes this massive, 8-foot long, 180-pound albino catfish caught by "an amateur" fisherman from London.
Joseph Madigan, 26, was vacationing in Spain with his uncle, "a keen fisherman," when the lad caught the fish of a lifetime, according to the report in Your Local Guardian.co.uk.
Madigan, despite his amateur status with a rod and reel, managed to land the beast in 30 minutes from the River Ebro, located near Barcelona. And no, the "keen fisherman" wasn't jealous.
"My uncle was OK about it," Madigan told the Guardian, "he caught a 150-pound catfish in the same week, so we both came home happy."
Though massive in size, the albino catfish caught by Madigan wasn't a world record. That is the 194-pound albino catfish landed last summer on the same stretch of river by another British angler.
Still, it is believed to be one of the biggest ever landed in Europe.

Women all over the world are embracing the concept of girlfriend getaways. The chance to abandon all responsibility and get away from the office and grumpy husbands, and go a girlfriend vacation is a chance that just about every woman would jump at. As more and more women only holidays are becoming popular, here are 8 Best Girlfriend Getaways in the US:
1. San Francisco
If you are into food, then San Francisco is girlfriends getaway heaven. San Fran, as it also affectionately known, is home to the Ferry Building and Farmers Market. Sheer culinary Mecca, San Fran is located on the fringes of the gorgeous California coastline and is the perfect destination for a girl’s weekend away. Great weather, fab shopping, exciting entertainment, (cultural attractions if you must!), lots of excellent wine and beautiful scenery are the only ingredients needed.
I just returned from the most amazing vacation (or "holiday" as they say in Europe) and it was the vacation of a life time. We took three weeks and cruised the Mediterranean - what a great way to travel! We booked a trip out of Barcelona Spain, spending four days in Barcelona and then on to Toulon, France, Italy (Florence, Pisa, Italy, Rome, Naples) and Greece (Athens and Mykonos) and then Turkey, stopping in both Izmir and Istanbul. We finished this amazing trip with four days in Venice. It was like a dream!
I love to have everything planned and plotted out so I feel like we didn't miss anything - not only see the sights but actually know what it is we are looking at and learning something along the way. I started planning this trip in January 2012 and we left on July 6th 2012, so I literally spent six months planning every inch of this trip. I researched all the tours and side trips because that is why we are cruising, to see all the ports and cities each day.
After looking up the trips on the cruise ship website for excursions .... I started to get a little stressed out about the prices - HOLY COW - I could not believe the prices of the tours and the buses just to get into the cities from the ports. We are traveling with four - me, husband and kids - and at $300.00 a person per excursion in 10 different ports - that really adds up.
As a professional basketball family, we have a pretty nice life but we are by no means millionaires and my husband is what some would call ....ummm, Extremely Frugal. The thought of me having to tell him that after he paid for this awesome trip - that the tours and trips into each port would add up to more than the trip itself - did not excite me in the least. I decided I had to find another way.
So I spent hours and hours researching how to travel each city, how to get from the port to the city, how to see the most important sights in each city, and how to do it for 1/4 of the cost of the prices from the cruise tours or travel agents and huge tour buses - ect! Now if you are a gazilionaire and have no problem paying this kind of money in all 10 ports, then go for it. I am definitely not knocking the guided tours but for us, the cost was just too much.
After compiling all this research, we went our cruise and I am proud to say it went off without a hitch. Okay, almost without a hitch (for my European readers 'hitch' is slang for 'problem').
I decided maybe I should share all this useful money-saving research with others. I think adventurous travelers would enjoy this trip, if they just knew how to get around all these amazing cities! I really think sometimes fear of the unknown limits people from traveling, but also people think it's too expensive.
So I have a series of 11 blog posts - one for each city - that I have complied for travelers who want to explore Europe on a budget. Each post will walk you through each and every city - from airport to the trains, plus taxis, pedestrian routes, ports (if cruising) and visiting the most important sites in two or three days. Also, how to get your kids involved in the trip and how to NOT break the bank while doing so.
Here is my account of each city and how to get around - from start to finish - how much fun we had while doing it and things we learned along the way! If you have any comments or questions please feel free to ask or send them to me.
The first post is all about Barcelona Spain - how to get there, get around and see the sights! Booking things in advance - train travel, airport, cruise terminal - walking the city, the beach and the sites .... It will all be here ! There will be a series of Blogs- all numbered in sequence - example Blog 2 of 11 - so you can track them and not miss a thing! I will also have a section on how we got the kids involved, learning and understanding what they saw along the
