It’s a question that’s been around a while, yet we still see it asked a lot… What is the version comparison difference between Adobe Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CS6 Extended? The Extended release is Adobe’s top-of-the-line Photoshop product, and they have one page on their site comparing the editions and feature differences, but it’s hidden in a corner and not obvious to find.
The short answer is that Photoshop Extended contains everything the standard version does, plus powerful tools that let you easily create and edit three-dimensional imagery as well as composite 3D objects into photographs, in addition to support for technical image analysis, measurement, and editing. The top additions are:
- 3D images and extrusions – Easily explore new creative directions: Quickly create 3D logos, type, and artwork using efficient and intuitive controls that have been vastly improved since CS5. Twist, rotate, extrude, bevel, and inflate your 3D designs, and then apply rich materials like chrome, glass, and cork.
- Advanced 3D editing capabilities – Push your creative boundaries with powerful 3D editing tools — even paint directly on 3D objects. Add 3D objects to your designs and create amazing composites. Illuminate your scene with real lighting, shadows, and reflections, and animate your objects.
- Mercury Graphics Engine for 3D – Dramatically increased power and speed via new graphics engine optimized for 3D imaging.
- Image analysis – Use measurement and counting tools to extract quantitative information from images. Record and export data for further analysis. Import DICOM files as frames or as a volume to directly analyze and edit your image data.
Video and motion-based content editing, which used to be an Extended-only feature in Photoshop CS5 and earlier, has now been moved and expanded into all versions of Photoshop for CS6.
Photoshop CS6 Extended is used by professionals in many fields, including film and video, graphic and web design that includes 3D and motion, manufacturing and product design, healthcare and science, students and educators, and architecture and engineering.
Which Version do the Trials, Suites, and Student Editions Contain?
There is only one trial available for Adobe Photoshop – and it’s the Extended edition… You get to try out all of the features for 30 days, and then decide which version you want to keep at the time of purchase.
The Student & Teacher Edition is similarly also always Photoshop CS6 Extended. It is not possible to purchase an education version of the standard Photoshop. On the flip side, you’re getting up to 80% off its normal price.
In the CS6 suites, three out of four of them (Master Collection, Design & Web Premium, and Production Premium) contain Photoshop CS6 Extended. Only Design Standard contains the regular Photoshop.

Comparison of Differences: CS6 vs. CS5.5 vs. CS5 vs. CS4 vs. CS3One of the most common upgrade questions we see out there is asking what’s new, what’s different, what’s better, what’s changed between Adobe CS6 and CS5.5 or CS5? Or more fundamentally, what are the key new features in CS6 versus prior versions, even compared to CS4 or CS3?
Creative Suite 6 contains hundreds of new or enhanced features and functions across the 14 point products that comprise it. So the easiest way to look at it is by major product… For example, Photoshop CS6 Extended has 62% more new features added in this cycle compared to the previous one, and nearly twice as many JDI requests (user-focused “Just Do It” items) addressed. You’ll find the details on these linked from the table below.
Adobe turns 30 this year. Over the decades the company has excelled at creating software that abstracts the latest technology in a way that makes it easy for customers to express unique ideas and deliver those ideas in a variety of media. Whether you’re editing an image with Photoshop, creating vector graphics in Illustrator, or laying out a page in InDesign, the goal of Creative Suite 6 is to give you total creative freedom along with the control and precision to ensure the highest quality when it comes to production. And when you combine the new time-saving features in CS6 together with the major reengineering of key user interfaces – in particular Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro – plus further deep optimization of tool performance, you should be able to get that work done faster and more efficiently.
So here they are, the breakouts by individual product – the CS6 vs. CS5.5 vs. CS5 vs. CS4 vs. CS3 version comparisons:

Overview
Poser 9 is the world’s easiest way to create art and animation using 3D characters. Poser’s simple to learn tools and included characters let you focus on making art, whether you’re a professional artist or dabbling in graphics for the very first time. Poser includes over 3 gigabyte of ready-to-pose, fully textured, human and animal figures, basic accessories such as hair, clothing, pose sets, real world props and 3D scene elements. With Poser 9 you can start creating 3D character art and animation in minutes. With the Face Room, customize Poser characters using facial photographs. Add dynamic hair and clothing. Build a3D scene on Poser’s virtual stage with props, lights and cameras. Automatically generate walking or running animations and talking characters. Import motion capture files for even more animated realism. Animate lights and cameras, and then render scenes into photorealistic images and video for web, print, and film projects.
Along with 8 brand new 3D humans, Poser 9 includes an improved user interface to maximize your workspace while providing better workflow, a new search-enabled library so you can find, organize and use your content easier, a dependent parameter tool that lets you teach objects in the scene to interact with each other, cross body morph brushes to smoothly sculpt a figure across every body part, new photorealistic rendering features that more accurately reproduce light and shadows, and improved character rigging for even better character bending. To save time, Poser 9 has been performance optimized so you can pose your characters and render them faster on today’s multiple processor systems.
Poser 9 includes advanced Weight Map Rig support to generate better performing 3D characters that can be more easily posed with natural joints across the body. Hybrid Rigging supports both traditional Poser Sphere and Capsule zones to be used in combination. Poser 9 also supports both traditional grouped body part figures and single mesh figures. Weight Map Support for third party figures is delivered within our native poser file format, the PZ3, an open, well documented format that has been at the heart of the creative Poser community for over 15 years.
Poser 9’s improved Firefly render engine now supports Indirect Lighting with Irradiance Caching for Global Illumination effects and even supports rendering with Ambient Occlusion. New Shader nodes enable SubSurface Scattering for luminescent skin tones, FastScattering for bioluminescent effects and a Tri-specular Hair Shader for more appealing trans-mapped hair highlights. Poser’s physically correct light fall-off produces more photo-real final renderings. Even share final content via Facebook with our direct upload to your Poser gallery.
Other new features include multi-select drag and drop from Poser’s Library, Expanded Context Menus for better workflow, new camera modes to focus on your selected area, pressure sensitive tablet support in the Morph Brush, improved Content Management system with drag and drop, auto conforming, search, meta data support, zone strength display for figure rigging, parameter change indicator and the Recent Render palette.
Whether you’re a serious artist, illustrator or animator or simply dream of playing with 3D characters, you’ll love getting creative with Poser 9!

A digital painting created with GMX-Photopainter, from Gertrudis Graphics.
While Corel Painter remains the premiere digital painting application, it’s not the only game in town. Today we’ll take a quick look at three programs that are similar to, and in some areas superior to, Corel Painter. The first one is freeware, the second has a free version available, and the third is quite inexpensive (less than $100). All three are Windows-only, at least for now. Let’s get started!
Artweaver is a freeware application, and appears to be the work of a single developer in Germany. The software is still in its early beta stages, so be prepared for some roughness around the edges. You’ll notice right away how very similar Artweaver’s interface is to Painter’s. Artweaver may in fact be a better free alternative to Painter than another program we reviewed a few months ago, ArtRage. First of all, the free version of ArtRage is missing quite a bit of functionality (though the full version of ArtRage is only $25). Secondly, Artweaver is much more like Painter than ArtRage is. ArtRage has a very small selection of brushes, and Artweaver has quite a few. The brush “engine” in Artweaver is more like that in Photoshop, however, than Painter. The brush does not seem to interact with the colors on the paper, as Painter does. Instead, it merely lays down color in the shape of whatever brush you’re using, as Photoshop does. There are paper texture types, as in Painter. You can create and or modify brushes and papers. Artweaver will work with your graphics tablet. The developer seems to be actively improving Artweaver, so it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.
Next up is Pixarra Twisted Brush, which is currently at version 15.65. Twisted Brush Open Studio is a free version, and is just like the full version (Twisted Brush Pro Studio), except that it comes with only a few brushes, and you can’t edit brushes. The full version is $119, and comes with thousands of brushes. It supports layers (as does Artweaver), masks, cloning, filters, and has a 64-bit brush engine (Painter’s is only 24-bit). Actively supported by the developer.
The third program in the list seems to be the most promising, especially for photographers: GMX Photopainter from Argentinian developer Gertrudis Graphics. If you’ve tried the new “Smart Brushes” in Painter X, you know what they’re supposed to do: follow the contours of the subject in the image, so that the result looks truly hand-painted. Nice idea in theory, but Corel has a way to go, in my opinion. GMX, however, seems to focus on this functionality. It performs more like a filter than a painting application, which may be just what you’re looking for. I can see this product being very useful to photography studios looking to add digital paintings to their offerings, without adding hours and hours of computer time to their workload. It’s not good enough to replace the work of great digital artists, but it will certainly do a good job of quickly delivering hand-painted results that really do look hand-painted. Part of the reason for this is that you interact with the program, telling it where to focus the detail, and where to loosen up. This interaction is completely missing from Painter. GMX also has a lot more brush types than the handful of Smart Brushes currently in Painter. GMX Photopainter is $94.95. A Mac version is in development.
