It was around the time I was introduced to working with Arduino for interactive project development that I discovered MakerBot Industries and I was very impressed with the creation of their 3D printer using open source technology. I also remember when they announced 20 MakerBot kits which were to be made available for public purchase, and now as a small business they’ve come a very long way. With now around 4000 MakerBots in use across the world, people are using this clever and easy to use technology to print out and use 3D creations for creative projects or even useful around the house needs.
The greatest update from MakerBot is that they have managed to harness the use of Microsofts Kinect which works as a 3D Scanner, the perfect buddy for their 3D printers, which is an incredible step up in their 3D rendering and printing development allowing them to scan real world objects and render them in 3D plastic representations. The use of the Kinect has grown throughout the open source community and thanks to hackers who began to develop the firmware hack for this device we are on the way to see the full potential of the 3D detection and spacial information that these cameras can offer us.
Peace.
